Makeup is one of the many wonders of this world, and because of this, there’s a high chance that you have a whole load of it. After all, you can’t just wear the same eyeshadow and the same color lipstick every single day. One of the best things about makeup is that you really can change things up and experiment, and this normally means that you use different products all of the time. However, this can also mean that some of your other products are left behind. They sit on your vanity or in your drawer for months on end, and then you only remember them when you decide to have that annual clear-out. So, how can you tell if your makeup has expired?
It irritates your skin
One of the sure-fire ways to know if your makeup has expired or not is to see whether it irritates your skin. Of course, nobody wants their skin to feel irritated after creating the perfect look, but you’ll be happy to know that it’s normally nothing to worry about. If you do start to feel your skin becoming itchy or red patches appear where you have applied, it’s a good idea to remove it completely and then throw the product away. You want to stay on the safe side, after all.
The application feels strange
If you’re one of those people that loves makeup, you also probably love the feel of a lip gloss sliding across your lips or the feel of highlighter on your cheekbones. You’re probably in-tune with how this is supposed to feel, which means that you’ll be able to tell if the application feels strange. The application normally feels weird when the product has gone off and is more sticky than usual, it has blogs of product on it, or it just doesn’t glide the way it used to.
The color is different
When you use makeup, you normally choose what you want to wear based on the color. You match your eyeshadow to your outfit, and you match your lipstick to your nails. However, if you ever apply some makeup and note that the color is a little different, it may be time to throw it in the trash. Although most makeup products are designed to last a long while, any change normally means that something is not quite right within the product itself. This shouldn’t be too hard to do, anyway, because who is going to apply foundation to their face that’s not the right shade for them?
It smells weird
Although you’re probably wondering why any makeup product would smell, considering many of them are odorless to begin with, you’ll be intrigued to know that this normally means that the product has expired. There are two things to look out for when it comes to your makeup products and their smell. If they are scented to begin with but have since lost their scent, there’s a high chance that the product has expired. Alternatively, if the product is not scented but smells like vinegar or gasoline, this is also a sign that it has expired. It’s always a good idea to make note of the smell before putting it on your face.
Although it can be hard to part with your beloved makeup, it’s important to throw away your expired makeup before it gets even worse. These are the signs you need to look out for.
