Tips on how to cleanse your face correctly

Cleaning your skin may seem pretty straight forward, but there are still a few things to consider. The skin on our face is more sensitive and delicate than other areas of the body. Scrubbing it with force is not going to help, instead, the focus needs to be on the products you use and how often you wash your face. Incorporating a few of these tips into your routine will keep your face clean and help with any problem areas.

Cleanse every morning and evening

Ideally, your skin should be cleaned every morning and evening, even if you don’t wear makeup. During the day, our bodies produce sweat and natural oils that accumulate on the skin. The pollution and dust lingering in the air also contribute to the buildup of dirt. This is why an evening skin regime is crucial for removing any dirt that has accumulated throughout the day. The same goes for the mornings. Pillowcases are a breeding ground for germs, even if they get washed very often. While we are sleeping, bacteria from our saliva and oils from our hair is transferred directly onto the pillowcase, which ultimately makes its way to our skin. A simple rinse in the morning will help remove these germs and open the pores, which increases the absorption of your moisturizer.

Use makeup remover

If you do wear makeup, use a high-quality makeup remover or wipe before you wash your face. Using a cleanser on its own will not remove all the makeup residue so it’s important to pre-cleanse it with a wipe. The “24-hour lasting formula” you see on many cosmetic bottles holds true. Foundation and mascara adhere to the skin, making it nearly impossible to remove it all. These makeup removers are nifty products, but they should only be used as a pre-cleanse. A facial cleanser should still be used to remove any excess oil and dirt.


Exfoliator is a product that everyone should invest in. A gentle exfoliating scrub helps to improve the skin’s radiance and remove the buildup of dead cells. The important thing to note about exfoliator is that it should not be used more than twice a week. The skin on our face is very delicate, over scrubbing it will cause irritation and inflammation. Try to find a product that has finer granules especially if you tend to have a heavier hand when washing your face. The finer granules work just as well to remove any dead cells and gently buff the skin without causing damage.

Use the right cleanser for your skin type

When it comes to cleanser, there are so many choices available that it can get a bit frustrating and confusing. It’s always best to look for brands that are suited for your skin type. A gentle milk cleanser is best for sensitive skin while a salicylic acid-based formula is best for oily or acne-prone skin. For drier skin, rather invest in a cream-based cleanser to help retain more moisture. When washing your face, lather it for no more than 20 to 30 seconds, rinse off with lukewarm water, and gently pat it dry with a soft towel. Be sure to use a clean, unused towel, there are always germs lurking especially in the humid conditions of the bathroom.

Finally, don’t forget to hydrate! Drink ample amounts of water during the day to keep your skin supple and looking radiant.
